Commonwealth Games

After Olympics, Commonwealth Games is the second largest sports festival in the world. The Games are held once in four years but only in between the Olympic years. The Games were originally known as the British Empire Games.


  1. The 1st Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 Hamilton, Canada.
  2. The 10th Commonwealth Games were held at Christchurch, New Zealand in 1974 and the 15th in Victoria (Canada) in 1994, where about 3,350 athletes from 64 nations (including South Africa, which joined the family of Commonwealth athletes after 36 years) participated.
  3. Namibia also, which gained its independence in 1990, made its debut while Hong Kong made its final appearance in the Games before being ceded to China in 1997.
  4. India, for the first time, participated in the second Commonwealth games held in London in 1934.
Commonwealth Games : 2018 
 

The 2018 Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast City in the south-east of the Australian state of Queensland from 4 - 15 April 2018.

On 4 April 2018, over 4,600 athletes and 2,000 team officials from 71 nations and territories converged on the Gold Coast for 11 day sporting and cultural event.

This is the 5th time that Australia has hosted the Games, the other being 1938 Sydney, 1962 Perth, 1982 Brisbane and 2006 Melbourne.

India's some Medal winners at the CWG 2018 

  1. Saina Nehwal won gold in Badminton (women's singles). 
  2. Manika Batra won gold in Table Tennis (women's singles) became the first Indian woman to do so. 
  3. Vinesh Phogat won gold in women's Wrestling (freestyle 50 kg Nordic event). 
  4. Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian javelin thrower to claim a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

  5. M.C. Mary Kom won gold in Boxing (45 - 48 kg category) event in her debut Commonwealth Games. 
  6. Bajrang Punia won gold medal in freestyle (65 kg) Wrestling. 
  7. Anish Bhanwala won gold in shooting (men's 25 m rapid fire pistol). 
  8. Shreyasi Singh won gold in the double trap women shooting. 
  9. Heena Sidhu won gold in Shooting (25 m pistol). 
  10. The Indian mixed team badminton claimed gold for the first time in the Games history.  
  11. Jitu Rai won gold in Shooting the (10 m men's air pistol event). This is his second Commonwealth gold. 
  12. The Indian team won its first ever Commonwealth gold medal in the women's Table Tennis event. 
  13. Manu Bhaker (the youngest Indian women at 16) won gold in 10m women's air pistol.

  14. Weightlifter Sanjita Chanu won gold medal in the women's 53 kg category. 
  15. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was the first gold medal winner for India, on the opening day, in the women's 48 kg category at the Commonwealth game 2018. 

  16. P.V. Sindhu picked up the women's singles silver medal in Badminton playing against Saina Nehwal.

  17. Kidambi Srikanth settled for Badminton silver. 
  18. Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Joshna Chinappa won silver in women's doubles squash. 
  19. Manika Batra and Mouma Das won a silver medal in the women's doubles, a first ever for India in the Commonwealth Games. 
  20. Seema Punia came up with a best effort of 60.41 m in the women's discus throw, which she did in her opening attempt to win her fourth successive Commonwealth Game medal. 
  21. Weightlifter P. Gururaja opened India's medal account on the first competition day, claiming a silver in the men's 56 kg category. 
  22. Teenager Deepak Lather from Haryana became the youngest Indian weightlifter to claim a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the men's 69 kg category. 
  23. Sachin Chaudhary won a bronze medal in the men's heavyweight category in para powerlifting. 
  24. The Indian group for the 2018 Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast City in Australia from April 4-15, comprises 218 athletes, 58 coaches, 17 doctors and physiotherapists, 7 managers and 22 other officials.
